Difference Between Plastic Surgeon and Cosmetic Surgeon

Most people use the terms plastic surgeon and cosmetic surgeon, thinking that they are the same thing. This is done so much that even the media and other doctors might use the terms interchangeably. However, there are some very distinct differences between the two that you should definitely know about.

But is there a difference, really?

Yes, really. Did you know that any medical professional with surgical training can be a cosmetic surgeon? They only need to be board certified in general surgery to be able to perform these surgical procedures. Because people think that the two are the same, they often end up under the care of an individual that does not have the appropriate education and training to be successful.

Differences in Education

Did you know that a plastic surgeon often goes through as much as eight years of University and five to six years of residency training before being even eligible for board certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery, which they cannot achieve for two additional years. On the other hand, a cosmetic surgeon will go to University for the same amount of time, but they will only have a three year general residency, and are usually self-taught in cosmetic procedures.

Check board certification carefully.

The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) is the only entity in the United States able to officially certify a plastic surgeon. Is that the organization on your surgeon’s certificate? Cosmetic surgeons may also hold a “certification,” but it will say it is from a Cosmetic Board of Surgery, which is not the same organization.
